 AutoLOD - Impostors v4.1.0 is an easy tool that provides full impostor management, from baking to rendering, with automatic LOD Group setup. An impostor is a billboard that displays an image of a 3D object. The image updates and changes according to the viewing angle to simulate a 3D effect and save on performance. Impostors are mainly used to render static objects far away in the distance to optimize the scene. They can also be used to achieve a unique art style with a 3D "snapping" effect. Technically, any object with a mesh renderer attached can be replaced with an impostor. However, they are best suited for static meshes at a distance. At closer ranges, the difference becomes noticeable because a simple quad does not intersect with surrounding objects in the same way as the original mesh. Additionally, impostors are baked in orthographic view, which means perspective is incorrect at close distances. Yes, impostors are compatible with the LOD Group component. The tool automatically sets up LODs, so you don't need to worry about geometry alignment. Baking an impostor may take up to 30 seconds, depending on your hardware and baking settings. The impostor shader is based on Unity's high-level surface shader, so it should work on any platform. No dependencies are required—this is a standalone package.
